Strike That Pose - Yoga Moves

Think Yoga is only for women, think again. Practicing yoga not only has physical benefits, but mental benefits as well. Yoga is defined by Webster’s Dictionary as a system of exercises for attaining bodily or mental control and well-being.

Engaging in a regular yoga routine can improve your flexibility. By stretching your muscles in new ways you increase your flexibility and range of motion. The concentration on slowly stretching the muscles in new ways helps to improve circulation by getting the blood flowing to the entire muscle.

Practicing yoga strengthens your body. Many yoga moves are focused on the body’s core muscles. In order to perform and hold yoga moves properly you must keep your core muscles tight, and in line. Which leads to a better awareness of your body, and shapely core muscles.

The practice of yoga also requires strength. Poses like the upward facing dog and the plank require upper body strength, while the chair pose works the lower body. Many of the standing poses require strength in the abdominal muscles.

One of the main focuses of yoga is breathing properly while maintaining the proper pose. The concentration required to properly practice yoga leads to a calm mental state, and more focus on you and your body. This helps to block out distractions, and some things that would normally cause stress. Many people report that they feel less stress and more relaxation beginning with their first class.

The strengthening of your core muscles, along with the flexibility and strength gained through practicing yoga leads to better posture while sitting and standing. It also leads to better balance. Many of the standing poses require good balance. The Tree pose combines strength and balance by standing on one leg while resting the other foot on the inner thigh of the standing leg.

Yoga has many benefits that can be reaped by everyone, so open your mind and let your body experience all that yoga has to offer.
